Fort Wellington is an historical military fortification located in the Town of Prescott, Ontario.  It
commanded the approaches to the Gallop Rapids, the first of a series of rapids as the St.
Lawrence River descends from Lake Ontario to the Atlantic Ocean.   Until these rapids were
bypassed by canals and, ultimately, the St. Lawrence Seaway, all cargo descending or ascending
the St. Lawrence River had to traverse these rapids in small, flat-bottomed bateaux, which could
manouevre through the rapids.

Today, Fort Wellington is operated by Parks Canada.  It is open to the public year-round, but
daily, guided access is available between the Victoria Day weekend in May and the Labour Day
weekend in September.
